Senior year capstone

Spring semester of our senior year, we are tasked with creating and completing a capstone project of our choosing. I chose to focus on textile design and sustainability and how it can be intertwined into the historical New Orleans Mardi Gras.

Being from Louisiana, Mardi Gras has always been apart of my life. While the magic of carnival season gives Louisiana its charm, there are many harmful attributes, one of them being the waste that is produced.

My goal with this project was to create a unique piece of the New Orleans royalty that was entirely second hand. Each piece of this queen collar is created using materials that were either caught during parades or used in costumes and balls of the previous season.

Each petal of the collar was created from pieces that were original apart of Mardi Gras. The beads that made up the flower were from caught Mardi Gras beads. The fabric was from a Mardi Gras seamstress. The inner lining was made of bags that the beads came in. The gold additives was from a costume piece and the feathers were from a Black Masking Indian after he created his suit for the season.
