Design Studio 1

my projects, creations, and pieces that were created through my design studios at Tulane University.

Studio 1:

Fundamentals

The first studio at Tulane is “Fundamentals”. In this course we focused on hands on design and creation and learned the importance of trial and error. The semester is broken up into two major projects, the mapping project, and the backpack project.

project 1:

the mapping project

The point of the mapping project was to create a map and a location that was important to us, and then recreate it in many different forms. The final product was made of paper, in which we created multiple trials to find the correct pattern for our piece.

project 2:

the backpack project

The backpack project was the second 7-week project of this semester. In this project, we were assigned to create six different backpacks, two with partners and four solo. The backpacks were also only supposed to be made of cardboard and tape, and were supposed to withstand a certain amount of weight. Here are the different backpacks I created and the work that went into them.

Backpack #1:

This was the first backpack I created with my partner. We wanted to incorporate weaving and sewing into the project, so we did that with pieces of duct tape. Our bag withheld the weight, but our professor challenged us not to use sharp corners for the next ones and to think more outside of a regular bag shape.

Backpack #2, 3 & 4

The third week of this project we were assigned to create three mini backpacks that had similarities to them. My similarities were the handles and straps — each of them were fish-braided cardboard.

backpack #6: final

Bag number six was with a new partner. My partner and I decided we wanted to think more outside the box than previous bags and we wanted to create something that held things, but wasn’t necessarily a “bag”. That is how we came up with the belt & boot compartments. These little holders were meant to attach to each other and then be able to attach to a belt of boots.

backpack #6: final

The backpack project was the second 7-week project of this semester. In this project, we were assigned to create five different backpacks, two with partners and three solo. The backpacks were also only supposed to be made of cardboard and tape, and were supposed to withstand a certain amount of weight. Studio 2:

visual communications & advocacy

Visual communications and advocacy is the service learning studio in the design major at Tulane. This course is split into two seven-week projects, “The Cause Project” and “The Pro-bono Project”. Each project is focused on nonprofit work and design.
